Are Gloria and Emilio Estefan just trying to help all Cuban Americans, or mainly helping themselves?

In one of the latest editions of the Miami Herald (click the newspaper in the blogroll) is vividly shown that the Estefans were hosting a political fundraiser for President Obama and the Democratic Party…

Jackie Bueno Sousa, in a column in a later page of the newspaper, indicates that although the motives of the couple are not known, the fundraiser that is raising $30,400 per attending couple for the Democratic Party has been met generally with suspicion and discontent from the Cuban-American community.

Whatever the couple’s intentions might be, what can be said for certainty is that the Cuban Americans of Florida, for various reasons, for decades have supported the Republican Party, and in turn the Republican Party has supported the aspirations of those who decry the communist regime in Cuba…  And — it just so happens that in November, Cuban-American Marco Rubio could likely be the Republican Party candidate for U.S. Senator from Florida…

Why now the shift to the Democrats by Gloria and hubby?…

Are they undermining the Cuban-American organizations who have opposed the Castro government for years, and are they being selfish and ungrateful to the political party that has had their back for decades?   Is there a desire by the couple to receive one day an ambassadorship to the island, once Fidel and Raúl Castro and the communists are no longer in power?  Wonder what a little fly on the wall at the Estefans would say?…

No one truly knows, of course, about anyone’s true motivations, but it could be that Gloria and Emilio have made a calculation that within the next 3-7 years,  years when President Obama logically might still be in the White House, the Castro brothers might die and the communists be out of power in Cuba.  And the ambassadorship and other perks in the new Cuba might be within their grasp.

Gloria Estefan’s family had connections to the Cuban government prior to Fidel Castro taking power — so a triumphant return to the island nation with an appointed position from President Obama would be a historical blessing for the Estefans…

 Just saying

  1. It seems to me that the Estefan family has decided that the Republican model of government no longer has the capability of advancing their agenda, whatever that may be. This is probably a corporate decision (switching to the Democrat Party) and who is to say it is anyone else’s business? The Castro brothers are indeed getting along in years, who will be their successor, and why not the Estefan family? These political moves take years to plan and carry out. I suspect the switch to the Democrat party is a culmination of many years of planning. Cuba is ripe for a friendly take-over and let’s be honest, the US government is more than interested and providing support for a nice Cuban family would be a given.
