The “White Man’s Burden”: for some, still alive and kicking?

In discussing the term “gone street”, as it relates to President Obama using street language about kicking someone’s behind, recently, ex Press Secretary  Dee Dee Myers indicated that those who described his particular terminology as having “gone street” were in effect drawing attention to his Black race, and that the description had racial overtones…

At other times, when people use a basketball analogy when referring to a particular action the president takes — because he is a capable player on the court —  similarly, the analogy is criticized by some (like MSNBC’s Norah O’Donnell) because they suggest bringing up basketball has racial implications!

All presidents are  subject to recurring criticism…  All presidents, as well, have some ardent supporters who defend their icon with distinctive gusto…

Because of his race, though, what differentiates specifically the world of criticism during this presidency is that continually some of President Obama’s most strident White defenders are quick to claim or imply that anyone who opposes him is, if not overtly racist, covertly they are…

But, underlying the attitude exemplified by these caucasian supporters seems to be that White supporters need to help the Black president, specifically because of his race…  Does not matter to them, evidently, that those who critique President Obama on policy matters or on his decision-making are doing so because he is the President of The United States of America,  not because he is The Black President of the United States…

The president’s White supporters (including members of the press) who are quick to label others as racist, in effect are the ones who apparently see him  simply and primarily as the Black president, and by their words and actions, are condescendingly treating him as inferior to their own race…

President Obama is the President of The United States of America, one of the most, if not the most powerful position on earth…  He does not need, nor want, I’m sure, to be seen simply as the Black President who needs his White supporters to help him because he is Black…

  1. Race divides, and liberals only win elections when America is divided.

  2. What the president said about kicking somebody’s tushy and about the picture of President Obama looking at the sand just seems that he is doing what his asistants tell him to do to convince people he cares. That is not right to try to fool people and the president should be a good example. Too much foul language as far as I see it.

  3. I hate to say this, but Carol and I are of the same mind on this one…

When they simply cannot come up with a good argument, or logic in his defense? Why play the race card of course!

  4. Here’s the deal, most of us could care less what race the president is, just do your dang job. For goodness sake, don’t make fun of me or my country by telling strangers you are ashamed of us. I would like to be able to defend you when your ignorance pops up now and then and put it down to inexperience, however, I am not pleased that we, as citizens, are not considered to be part of the “family,” any longer because we dare to disagree with you. Heck to most of us, Mr. President, you are still wet behind the ears. To my way of thinking, you should be asking us for advice, not dictating orders. You simply don’t know the people over which you rule.

  5. Well put. But his supporters desperately need some sort of deflective action to justify his abysmal performance on so many issues.
